Culzean Castle - Scotland, Year Round { 41 images } Created 22 Nov 2016
Culzean is the romantic 18th-century Robert Adam castle and estate perched high on the Ayrshire sea cliffs overlooking the Firth of Clyde and Clyde estuary islands of south western Scotland.
A former seat of the Kennedy Clan, it is now managed by the National Trust for Scotland and encompasses landscaped sunken gardens, follies, glasshouses, a vast walled garden, loch and woodlands. The walled garden is split into two distinct themes. On one side, a series of production areas grow cut flowers and edible produce for the great house whilst on the other, pathways and lawns allow visitors to stroll around ornamental trees and highly colourful borders purely for the pleasure of observation. The sunken gardens show what can be grown within the prevailing Gulf Stream climate whilst more tender varieties were consigned to the highly ornate Orangery (now Camellia House).
